How do I check my credit record?
There are three credit reference agencies, each of which may
hold different information about you. You may find it useful to
obtain a copy of your file from each agency.
The easiest way to order your file is online from either Equifax
and Experian. Alternatively you can write enclosing a cheque for
£2 made payable to Equifax or Experian, giving your full name,
date of birth, current address and any addresses you have had in
the last six years. If you run a business, give its name and
address as well, because separate information could be held on
you under your business. If you've changed your name in the last
six years, please provide those details too. There are three

You should receive a copy of your file within
seven working days.
It is important to also understand that every time a potential
lender carries out a credit search this is also registered with
the credit referencing agency. This means that if you have
applied for several credit cards or loans over a fairly short
period of time you could be harming your credit worthiness.
Credit card issuers will become concerned if you are applying
for several credit, or that you have been declined several times
by other issuers.
When you apply for a credit card, the provider will use the
information you provide on the application to make a decision as
to whether to offer you a card.
Electoral Roll. Are you on
the electoral roll for your current address? This will influence
your credit card application greatly.
Length of Residency. How
long have you lived at your current address? Do you own the
property or are you renting? This will help the credit card
company determine your stability.
Credit History. Do you have
a credit history? i.e. do you have any other credit cards or
loans which the credit card provider can determine your credit
history.
